Erte (Romain de Tirtoff, 1892-1990, Russian/French) “Hera & Zeus with Peacock” (1989) Limited edition cold painted polychrome patina on bronze sculptures with enamel decoration. Both Zeus and Hera carry staffs and have incised ‘Erte’ signatures and stamp numbers with foundry, ‘‘Seven Arts Ltd London © 1989’. The Peacock is also stamped/numbered. Matching edition on all 3 sculptures (3/500). Zeus measures 18.375 x 14.5 x 12.5 inches. The Hera sculpture is 16 x 10.75 x 9.5 inches, and her peacock symbol measures 3.5 x 5 x 2 inches. A gold chain attaches the peacock to Hera’s hand.
Mythological Greek god Zeus is holding his iconic lightning bolts and his wife Hera (Queen of the gods and Mount Olympus), is depicted with one of her peacocks, the ancient symbol of immortality. The clean, flowing lines and crisp curves of Hera, Zeus and their robes are a wonderful example of Erté’s signature Art Deco style.
