(After) Fernand Leger (1881 – 1955, French) “Le Cycliste” – Color lithograph on Rives vellum paper, initialed and dated (F.L. 48) in the lower right of the design; published by Maeght Editeur Paris, reproduced after the original 1948 gouache painting. The image measures 21 x 15 inches and with the mat and frame, the work of art is 36 x 24 inches. Bicycles, figures, and depictions of leisure in the early twentieth century appeared prominently in Leger’s art, as were elements of visual cubism, graphic shapes, and free-floating color planes penetrating his simplified figures and objects. Note: There is a crease in the upper center sheet edge, some soft handling creases, pale toning upper sheet edge, and is otherwise in good condition.
This image was also used on a lithographic poster titled “Le Travail” (Work) and printed by the Mourlot Workshop in Paris to advertise the exhibition “LES PEINTRES TÉMOINS DE LEUR TEMPS” (Salon of Painters Who Witnessed Their Times) at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris held from February 2 to March 4, 1951.
