Alexander Calder (1898-1976, American) “Composition” (1964) Original color lithograph, initialed by the artist in the design (plate); commissioned by Fernand Mourlot and printed in Paris by Mourlot Press. The sheet measures 10 x 7.5 inches, and with the matting and frame, the work of art is 16.5 x 12.5 inches. The image consists of a large red circular shape above a smaller blue one in the central portion, with a black spotted angle shaped form on the lower left above the artist’s CA monogram. On the verso of the sheet is printed “Alexander Calder Composition” and there is a printed label from ‘Ferdinand Roten Galleries Baltimore’. The image was included on page 61 of the book, "Lithographies de L'Atelier Mourlot" (London: Redfern Gallery, 1965); ["Prints from the Mourlot Press" issued for their landmark traveling exhibition sponsored by the French Embassy and The Smithsonian.] Note that there is some discoloration and toning in the margins near the mat.
