(After) John Lennon (1940-1980, British) “BABY GRAND” (L.107) Limited-edition lithographic print after the original 1970 ink self-portrait that is a drawing of himself composing music and song while sitting at the white baby grand piano in the living room of the Lennon home at the Dakota apartment building in New York. Creative ideas in the form of musical notes from flowers seem to flow into his head from a hat sitting atop the piano. The joyful work of art features a chop mark stamp in red and reads, in Japanese, "Like a Cloud, Beautiful Sound." It is numbered 4764/5000 in pencil in the lower left and an embossed blind stamp seal consisting of his name and a reproduction of his signature on transparent green foil ink is centered under the image on the sheet of #90 Fieldstone Navajo Paper. This lithograph was authorized by Yoko Ono (Marigold Enterprises) on behalf of Lennon’s estate, and it was printed and published by Bruce McGaw Graphics in 1988. The image measures 15.25 x 19.5 inches, and with matting, Plexiglas cover, and white frame, the work of art is 37 x 25 inches.
Beatles musician John Lennon was both a rock ‘n’ roll musician/songwriter as well as an artist. He sketched from a very early age and continually drew certain moments from his life. Yoko Ono has carried on by sharing Lennon’s cache of drawings that were created during 1960’s and ‘70’s.
