Roberto Matta (1911-2002, Chilean) “Judgment” (1967) Limited-edition, signed, color etching with aquatint on Arches paper from the “Judgments” portfolio of 7 images. The work of art is hand-signed, numbered 28/100 in pencil, and was printed by Atelier Georges Visat, Paris, and published by Editions of the Blue Moon Gallery, Yorktown Heights, New York. The 20 x 26-inch sheet is enclosed in a 22 x 28-inch wood frame with glass. The piece is in good condition with some discoloration in the margins. Literature: Sabatier 175.

Roberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren, better known as Roberto Matta, was one of Chile's best-known painters and a seminal figure in 20th century abstract expressionist and surrealist art. This print represents one of Matta’s preferred subjects in printmaking: politics. The “Judgments” series is a critique of war and includes the following images: “Blitz; Soldiers Defending the Master Race; Genocide; Nuremberg Judgement; After the Nuremberg Trial; Tomorrow, the World...; and To Be Read in One's Own Mirror After Looking at Oneself.” The complete portfolio includes an introduction by Lawrence Saphire (see photo) [Literature: Sabatier 174-180]

Examples of Matta’s works are presently held in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Palm Springs Art Museum, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.
