R.C. Gorman (1931 – 2005, Native American) “Navajo Rug” (1982) Lithograph in colors, hand-signed and dated in the lower left and numbered in Roman Numerals IX/XXV (9/25) in the lower right in pencil by the artist. (There is also a regular edition of 200.) The work of art was printed and published by Western Graphics Workshop; the image is 22 x 25 inches and with margins, matting, under glass and frame, it is 35 x 38 inches. There is some discoloration in the matting, otherwise the piece is in good condition. Depicted is a nude Navajo woman lying on a traditional hand-woven Navajo rug/blanket colored with natural dyes. Rudolph Carl Gorman was a Navajo Indian artist known for his traditional stone lithography as well as acrylic painting, serigraphy, ceramics, bronze sculpture, and paper casting. His primary medium was pastel and he created colorful depictions of Navajo women set against a simple, tranquil background. His talent as well as his personality helped bring national attention to his work.
