Arie (Eisman) Azene (b.1934, Israeli) Untitled (Artist’s Bedroom, Interiors and Chairs) - This limited-edition hand colored lithograph features several images of Azene’s artistic creations including a brightly hued watercolor (or serigraph?) of an interior with a bed, nightstand, chair, wall art, and bookcase known as “The Artist’s Room”; a drawing of a chair; and two smaller images (a drawing and a watercolor) of indoor chairs with their surrounding furnishings. The images appear to be placed as if on a page of a scrapbook with a grid of small squares on the background paper. The lithograph is hand signed and numbered 177/240 in pencil in the lower left. The sheet measures 27 x 19 inches and it has been matted and placed in a 30.25 x 24.25- inch frame. Provenance: Michael Hittleman Gallery, Los Angeles.
Azene was born in Germany, but his family immigrated to Israel shortly after his birth. He studied in Israel and Paris; lived briefly in England and Germany; lived on a kibbutz in the Judean Hills, and then settled in Jerusalem in 1984. Azene works in pencil and aquarelle. His early work was abstract, but has evolved over the years, has become more figurative and realistic. During the 1980’s, he created works in landscape and still life. His color palette is often based on two complementary hues, with a predominance of various combinations of gray.
