Corneille nee Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922-2010, Belgian/Dutch) “ L’Arbre Rouge” (The Red Tree) (1984) Limited edition color lithograph on Arches wove paper, signed, dated, titled, and numbered 44/125 in pencil. The image measures 21.5 x 21.5 inches, and with margins, matting, and color-coordinated red frame with glass, the work of art is 29 x 27.5 inches. It is in apparently good condition but has not been examined outside of the frame.
This colorful image was also featured on a large earthenware bowl issued in 1993 in a limited edition of 25. A subsequent color lithograph of this image was issued posthumously in 2013 (authorized by his widow) in a small, limited-edition of 5, with a designated creation date of 1980.
Corneille was one of the founders of the CoBrA movement in 1949-1950. He used strong color contrasts and compact shapes in his images created in various media, including paintings, gouaches, drawings, prints, ceramics, and decorative objects depicting tropical landscapes and gardens with plants, animals, and women.
