Stoul (b. 1981, France) “ORU Chroma Ball” (2017) Original acrylic paint and stone on canvas, hand signed in the lower left, measures 39.5 x 39.5 inches. This stunning, multi-color work of art is on a stretch canvas frame surrounded by a black wood frame measuring 41.5 x 41.5 inches. The artist has titled, dated and signed the piece on the verso. In 2013, Stoul began a fascination with the Japanese art of origami and integrating lines, triangles, geometric shapes and architecture into her increasingly abstract work.
Stoul is a visual artist, urban artist and muralist. She has evolved from creating figurative female cat-faced characters to linear and angular origami-influenced art. The ORU (an acronym for "Operation Urban Renewal") series refers directly to the art of Japanese folding and renewal/transformations of the city. It began in 2013 and remains ongoing. She is deeply involved in causes including the environment, gender equality and socio-cultural actions.
Note: The artist had donated this work of art, and we acquired it from, a charity auction benefitting Jolokia Association, founded in 2012 to spread positive messages about diversity and inclusion.
