Pablo Picasso (1881-1973, Spain/France) “Taureau Sous L'Arbre” (Bull Under the Tree) (1952) Turned round plate of white earthenware clay, oxidized paraffin decoration, with black and white enamel from a limited edition of 500. Inscribed “Edition Picasso and stamped “Madoura Plein Feu” (Full Fire) and “Edition Picasso” on the verso. The diameter of the round plate is 20 cm (7.75 inches) and its literary reference is A.R. 159 (Pablo Picasso: Catalogue of the Edited Ceramic Works 1947-1971. A. Ramié. 1988. #159.) This work of art displays Picasso’s love of the bull, with its energy, muscles, and strength. The addition of color (green) and dots around the rim combine to enhance this impressive piece.
After Picasso attended a pottery exhibition in the Cote d’Azur region of Vallauris, France, he began working with Georges and Suzanne Ramie, owners and ceramists of the Madoura Pottery Studio. There he created plates, pitchers, plaques, and vases that feature mythological and classical motifs, portraiture, bullfighting, nature, and landscapes as both unique pieces and limited-edition sets. Each work was cast and hand-painted at the Madoura Studio.
