Garo Antreasian (1922 – 2018, Armenian American) Untitled (1973) Limited edition color lithograph, signed, dated and numbered (3/15) in pencil by the artist, with the artist’s blind stamp in the lower right. The image measures 22 x 22 inches, and with mat and frame, the work of art is 30.25 x 30.25 inches. This piece appears to consist of 4 quadrants of stripes, 3 in graded shades of light and dark grays presented horizontally and the lower right quadrant in diagonal stripes in alternating hues of grays and oranges. Antreasian's art has been described by Gerald Peters (of the Santa Fe Gallery) as, “… characterized by his strong sense of architectonic structure and his abiding interest in the rhythmic patterns of ornamental design…”.
Garo Antreasian was a painter, lithographer, art educator, and founder of the Tamarind Institute of Lithography in Los Angeles where he was the first technical director and master printer. In 1971, he co-authored (with Clinton Adams) the definitive text for creative lithography, ‘The Tamarind Book of Lithography: Art and Techniques’. Also, during the 1970s, he began creating abstract artwork. In 2015, he published his book, ‘Garo Z. Antreasian / Reflections on Life and Art.’ His work is included in the permanent collections of many major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in NYC; the Smithsonian American Art Museum; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Guggenheim Museum; the Library of Congress; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
