Mother and Child

Edna Hibel (1917 – 2014, American) “Mother and Child” is a limited edition, hand signed lithograph in colors with gilt in good condition. The image measures 25 x 19 inches, the image is 30 x 22 inches, and with custom designed off-white linen matting, it is 33.5 x 28 inches (no frame.) One of Hibel’s iconic mother and child images, this scene depicts a woman holding a child with the profile of another woman in the upper left background. This piece is numbered I 144/147 ed. 300.*

*The numbers on the bottom of a lithograph or other graphic signify which number the image is, and how many such images are in the entire edition. For example, 144/147 means that this is image number 144 out of a total edition of 147 images. Because of the variety of effects achievable with the lithographic process by varying the papers, inks and transparency of color, Hibel often found more than one combination that pleased her for a particular lithograph. Rather than eliminate all but one section or series, the edition is developed into more than one section. The Roman numeral indicates the section of the image. Each section has a different color scheme, but the key image (a specific mother and child) is the same for each section. For example, I 144/147 ed 300 means that this is image 144 out of 147 images in section I, and that there are 300 images in the entire edition.
