(After) Roy Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997, American), “Roommates” (1994) is a limited-edition silkscreen reproduction in color on Arches paper, hand-numbered 19/199 with Signature Imprimee. The sheet measures 76 x 51 cm (30 x 22.5 inches) and the image dimensions are 21. x 17 inches. Lichtenstein uses his signature Ben-Day dots to create gradations of shading in this depiction of two women (one lying nude) in an interior bedroom scene, while leaving unanswered the question, “What is the woman in the foreground going to say?”
“Roommates” was one of a series of nine screenprints that Lichtenstein produced in 1994 on the subject of the nude. The prints were made at Tyler Graphics Ltd., Mount Kisco, New York and are recorded in the second volume of the catalogue raisonné of the artist’s prints (Corlett and Fine 282, 2002).
In 2019, one of the original 40 regular edition screenprints by Lichtenstein sold for over $200,000 at Sotheby’s.
