Paul Jenkins (1923 – 2012, American) “Untitled IV” also known as “Phenomena Open Light” (1973) The lithograph is hand signed in pencil by the self-described “Abstract Phenomenist” artist. The image measures 20 x 26 inches and with the mat and frame, the piece is 27.5 x 34.5 inches. Jenkins at times would title his works using the word ‘Phenomena’, followed by a descriptive phrase. In this work, a bright yellow aura splits the image, perhaps reminiscent of a ray of light vertically opening the image.
Jenkins is recognized for his technique of paint-pouring directly onto the canvas and use of non-traditional tools including a knife rather than a brush to apply paint. The vivid color in his creations seems to put his compositions in motion. In his own words, “I try to paint like a crapshooter throwing dice, utilizing past experience and my knowledge of the odds. It’s a big gamble, and that’s why I love it.” His work is included in many contemporary art institutions; among them The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Norton Simon Museum in California, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
