Louis Icart (1988 – 1950, France) “Hoopla” aka “Nu Au Chapeau Rouge’ (Nude with Red Hat). Icart created/copyrighted the image (circa 1935) as an etching/copper plate engraving. In the late 70’s a renewed interest in Icart’s work was ignited, and this offset print was reproduced in 1979 in the Netherlands. An example of Icart’s art deco/boudoir art, this piece depicts a reclining female nude in a jaunty red hat playfully kicking off her red high heels. The sheet measures 15.5 x 19.5 inches; condition is good but there is a slight crease down the center and probable thumbtack holes in the corners. The artwork has been surrounded by brown suede matting to enhance this happy lady’s brown furry blanket and the piece is set in a simple frame measuring 18.5 x 24.5 inches. Literature: The 1935 etching is catalogued as HCI 440 in “Louis Icart: The Complete Etchings” by Holland, Catania & Isen (Schiffer Publishing Ltd.)
