Marc Chagall (1887 – 1985, Russian/French) “Homage ‘a Ravel” – this image is half of a double page bookplate from the 1969 VIP book of drawings and watercolors published by Tudor, New York called “The Ballet” and ‘after’ a watercolor. The work has not been examined outside of the frame, but it appears to be an offset lithograph on paper. The piece is signed ‘Marc Chagall’ in the lower center and the title “Homage ‘a Ravel” is written vertically in the lower right corner. The image measures 13.25 x 9 inches and it has been elaborately matted and placed in an ornate gold colored frame measuring 31.5 x 27 inches.
This work of art is one of Chagall’s dreamscapes in shades of blue in which several of his recurring symbols and characters appear: a sheep, two angels, two young lovers, a satyr, and a crescent moon. (Note: In the full-size image, circus acrobats, a flock of farm animals and a floating Eiffel Tower are also depicted. See last photo.)
