FRANK STELLA (b. 1936, USA) - The image is called “Kozangrodek” from the artist’s Polish Village Series (1970-1974.) This work of art is a poster (photo offset reproduction) published by Tyler Graphics, Ltd. (New York) for the Paper Reliefs series of November 1975. It measures 34” x 20” and the frame size is 39.5" x 25.5."
Stella’s Polish Village Series consists of forty works each with three separate iterations produced in stages indicative of the artist’s process: first a collage of flat materials on canvas, followed by the same flat materials mounted on a wooden support, and finally, tilted planes of acrylic, felt, and canvas mounted on cardboard. Stella titled each work in the series after a village in Poland, referring specifically to their synagogues, which were constructed between the 17th and 19th centuries and destroyed under Nazi occupation between 1939 and 1945. Cheap materials, minimal abstract forms, and titles with weighted historical references are hallmarks of Stella’s celebrated abstract works.
The Paper Reliefs are a series of paper-pulp reliefs with collage and hand-coloring, completed by Frank Stella in 1975. Stella collaborated with Kenneth Tyler (of Tyler Graphics, Ltd.) and John Roller at the paper mill to develop a standard for each edition, but all of the Paper Reliefs were hand-painted by the artist in his New York studio between September 1974 and November 1975.
