Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) was an influential American painter, and the leading force behind the abstract expressionist movement in the art world. By the mid 1940s, Jackson Pollock introduced his famous 'drip paintings', representing a most original body of work that made an impact on the course of American art. Often, his canvases were either set on the floor, or laid out against a wall, rather than being fixed to an easel. Pollock allowed the paint to drip onto the canvas from the paint can. Instead of using a traditional paint brush, he used knives, trowels, or sticks to add depth to his works. Similar to the Surreal movement, this art form had a direct relation to the emotions, expression, mood, and feelings of the artist.
