Louis Icart (1888-1950, France.) "Spanish Dancer" (Danse Espagnole) is an Art Deco era hand painted etching of a Spanish flamenco dancer. The image measures 21" x 14" and with mat/frame, it is 31" x 23." Text reads: "Edited by David Ashley, Inc., New York City" (top left) and "Copyright 1929 Louis Icart, Paris" (top right,) and contains the following identifications: hand signed (LR,) and has "Louis Icart, Paris" windmill stamp embossed in the lower left. Beneath this, but barely legible, appears to be a number (478?) in pencil. There is a very fine tear at the top of the etching. Beautifully matted and framed.
Louis Icart etchings were created of women from the art deco period. His art epitomizes the image of the female form during that time, and he often used his wife Fanny as his model. He used a combination of techniques to create over 500 etchings. These include drypoint, etching, and sugaring. Each Louis Icart etching was enhanced with hand coloring. While he generally hand signed his etchings in the lower right corner he usually didn't do the hand coloring. This would have been done by his studio.
