Shemi was an Israeli sculptor. His environmental sculptures are displayed in open spaces around the country. Also known for landscape drawings and paintings, teaching. His early works, before 1950, are figurative. The majority were done using traditional methods such as carving in stone. In the mid-1950s Shemi began welding metals. At first, he created figurative sculptures, such as “Bird” (1957). In the 1960s he focused on abstract assemblages. In the 1970s he began producing large-scale works, influenced by constructivist trends. Among his best-known works are “Sea Sculpture” (1967) in Atlit, his “Memorial to the Fallen Soldiers of the Egoz Unit” (1972) at Ben Gurion Airport, and the series of sculptures “Syllables.” In addition to his sculpting, in the 1980s he began to produce paintings and prints.
