Willem de Kooning (American/Dutch, 1904–1997) Exhibition Cover Lithograph. This image was the cover of the program catalog for de Kooning's exhibition at the Albright Knox Gallery in Houston in 1975. From one of the artist's "Woman" paintings that were part of de Kooning's work for years, and easily the most prominent. A commercial offset lithograph torn from spiral bound program cover, it measures 17 1/2" x 22 1/4" and with the frame and matting, it is 25" x 31." The work of art is imprinted at the top, "De Kooning drawings/sculptures; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston / 21 February - 6 April 1975..." and is signed "de Kooning" in the upper left. The same image (without imprint) was used as the cover for an 88-page soft cover book published by Dutton in 1974, "De Kooning: Drawings, sculptures : an exhibition organized by Walker Art Center [held at] Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, March 10-April 21, 1974...." Willem de Kooning moved to the US from the Netherlands in 1926 and married artist Elaine Fried in 1943. He was a member of the NY School of artists (including Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell and many more.) After WWII, he quickly became a popular abstract expressionist. Since his passing of Alzheimer's in 1997, de Kooning's work has skyrocketed in value. Originals of any in the 'Woman' series have sold for millions and are held in private collections.
